TOKONOMA
A Creative Project Space

Inspired by alcoves in traditional Japanese homes that were created to inspire contemplation and observation of beauty, Tokonoma brings encounters with art, design and ideas.

The Tokonoma exhibit area, a large wall like an empty canvas for imagination juxtaposed by a panoramic window painted by lush foliage.

A space for exhibitions and curation.
A space for creation of art and design.
A space for connecting, reflection and dialogue.
A space to challenge the status quo, reimagining third spaces.

NOW SHOWING – 02 'The Art of War' Creativity born from conflict

Poster for an art exhibit titled 'The Art of War' at Tokonoma on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 2pm to 7pm, with a photo of a sign reading 'Creativity Born from Conflict' in front of a rough-textured surface.
Text reading 'Create a story born from your connection' in stylized, dark brown, uneven font on a light background.
Close-up of the show dating from 17 May to 29 June 2025.

These objects reveal how artists and makers navigate conflict—not by glorifying war, but by reworking its materials and imagery into acts of remembrance, defiance, or reinvention.

Display of military camouflage pants arranged on hooks inside a white-walled gallery or store, with a window showing greenery outside and a framed colorful abstract art piece on the adjacent wall.
Text in burnt edges style that reads 'TOKONOMA: THE ART OF WAR'

Whether through a rug, a uniform, or a chair, each piece transforms instruments of survival into symbols of resilience, identity, and cultural memory. The Art of War exposes a powerful paradox: even in war, creativity endures.

Every object on view has been carefully selected from private collections for its rarity and resonance.

Witness how history is woven, welded and worn into form. How conflict influences craft, fashion and design–from Afghan rugs woven with tanks and rifles to camouflage repurposed on runways.

Black T-shirt hanging on a wire rack with text about an inaugural show and list of artists, displayed in an art exhibit.

This inaugural exhibition, DNA (Design Nor Art), pays fealty to these avant-garde pioneers, celebrating imperfection, diversity, and that inscrutable, anarchic spirit.

Showcasing eight objects that defiantly defy categorization, DNA embodies unapologetic rebellion, individuality, and the fusion of utilitywith imagination.

Black spray-painted text on paper with information about an exhibit titled 'TOKONOMA.' The exhibit runs from January 10 to February 28 and focuses on cultural, project, and space aspects of design and art. The text is in a bold, artistic style with a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters.

Selected for their historical significance and distinctive character, the objects in the exhibition are paired, like strands entwined in a double helix, to reveal shared aesthetics while suggesting newcontextual perspectives.

DNA serves as a metaphor for our philosophy, igniting the first of many projects at TOKONOMA.It symbolizes our unwavering commitment to curiosity, dialogue, and ideas.

Ever since Duchamp's 1914 Bottle Rack and the subsequent upending of the zeitgeist, certain creative makers have expanded Duchamp’spunk attitudes through their contributions.
