'The Art of War' Soldier Shirt

SGD 65.00

Paying homage to one of the most-seen stills of the Vietnam War — a young soldier marked by conflict, fighting for something he didn’t want in the first place. Originally featured in In The Year of the Pig (1968), a documentary by American filmmaker Emile de Antonio, the image was a powerful anti-war statement.

The young soldier in the still used to publicise the film is Marine Corporal Michael Wynn, who hailed from Marion, Ohio. He was 20 years old when the picture was taken on 21 September 1967 in Da Nang, South Vietnam, in the middle of what was termed “Operation Ballistic Charge”. He'd only been in the Marine Corps for a year.

It resurfaced years later on Meat is Murder, the 1985 album by The Smiths, where it was repurposed into another kind of protest, one against industrial violence and apathy. That shirt, like the album, became an icon.

We revisit it now through a new lens as part of ‘The Art of War’ series by Tokonoma. Taking inspiration from the original Meat is Murder album cover, the Tokonoma logo is placed by the image where the exhibit dates appear on the helmet, in place of the album title.

Screen-printed on the original Tokonoma boxy oversized tee in white with custom tags and labels.
220GSM, 100% cotton, combed.

Sizes 1 - 3 available.
Gentle cold wash inside out only.

Produced in limited quantities, this is a one-off run.
